So the Golden Globe happened on Sunday 12th of January. It was hosted by two of my favorite female comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The ladies opening monologue was hilarious and spot on. Congrats to all the winners including one of my favorite TV shows Breaking Bad. Now to the fashion here are in my humble opinion the top 10 best dressed looks of the night.
My apologies for the late post been busy with school. But anyway here's your Model for Monday, the beautiful Jourdan Dunn.
Jourdan only four years older than me (23) a British native began her modeling journey around 2006 where she was signed to Storm Model Management. Jourdan became the first black model to walk for Prada in over 10 years! Jourdan has also modeled for Calvin Klein, Victoria Secret,Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent just to name a few. She was apart of a star studded modeling ensemble for the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics. Jourdan was named Model of the year in 2008 at the British Fashion Award and in 2013 she was named Model of the year at the Harper's Baazar Women Of The Year Awards. Oh and did i mention she was in Beyonces 'Yonce' video! I chose Jourdan for many reasons. I love her attitude i love the fact that she says what she wants i respect that. Jourdan has voiced her opinion on many occasion on the lack and need for racial diversity on the runway. This is a topic that many people are scared to talk about but not Jourdan. She has spoken up , along with Chanel Iman and Naomi Campbell, combined with other colored models have opened doors from black models to have a chance in this industry. I also love her self determination. At the age of 19 in 2009 she opened up to Teen Vogue about her pregnancy. Many people were negative about it but i love that she didnt make any of that deter her from her dreams. She had her gorgeous son funny enough, December the 8th, my birthday. Jourdun is hilarious on the social media she really is a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to yound girls out there. I applaud her and wish her nothing but luck. Last night Project Runway crowned a winner for season 3 . The 3 finalist were Seth Aaron, Korto Momolu and Elena Slivnyak. The 3 finalist showcased their collection which were based on their heritage or homeland. I must admit i loved each collection i really did get a feel for each persons interpretation of there heritage.
Seth Aaron based his collection on his Spanish heritage . His collection was strong and vibrant. Judge Issac Mizahri, however thought that styling wise Seth was a mess which i do agree. I personally did not see many 'ready to wear' pieces in his collection. Korto's collection was inspired by her homeland Liberia. I absolutely loved her collection it definitely showcased her homeland and culture yet she kept it modern and fun. Many of her pieces were actually wearable i could see myself in any of the pieces from her collection. I also loved her choice of color it was really earthy and reminiscent of her homeland. The judges thought she was the most inventive of the 3. However some of the judges thought her more structured pieces were not strong enough and i do to an extent agree with them. Elena's collection was created with her country Ukraine in mind. Most of her pieces were amazing the structure and creativity was really outstanding it was very much reflective of her country. The leather and wool mixture was a big hit, judge Issac Mizahri lamented on how much he liked it ( i concur) . Judge Alyssa Milano however said that she (Elena) spent way too much time on the top half and not enough time on the bottom half of her outfits, making them look ill fitted.
Elena was eliminated first, then it came down to Korto and Seth. Seth was named winner of season 3 and Korto runner up..again. All in all this was a good-ish season could have been better personally i wanted to Korto to win. But all 3 designers were amazing. Congratulation Seth and well done ladies. Here are videos of each designer's collection courtesy of YouTube and Lifetime.
I am obsessed with belts before i moved to the United States i had a very large belt collection. I believe in the power of belts they are the perfect accessory . Belts magically creates a waist, polishes a look and transforms an outfit. For someone like me that literally has no hips, belts give the illusion of a fuller figure. There are different ways to wear the belt, traditionally worn to keep the pants up, around the waist and low on the hips, They really look great on any figure when styled correct. For example for women with fuller hips should probably not wear wide belts, they add bulk when worn along the mid section a more narrow belt would work much better. Wearing belts lower on the hip can draw attention from the tummy if that's the problem area. If you're like me and want to add curves tighten the belt around the waist not too tight just enough to give the illusion of curves. The fashion style really is all up to you. Belts are no longer just for holding up jeans they literally transform the body and gives confidence.
-DRUM ROLL PLEASE- Today we look at the amazing Joan Smalls. Joan Smalls is a fellow Caribbean girl born in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. Joan is ranked the #1 model in the world (according to 'models.com) since September 2012. Joan has strutted her stuff for top designers like Givenchy, Cavalli , Versace , Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney just to name a few. She has graced the covers of magazines such as Vogue (Italia, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Russia, Australia, Brazil), Elle ( US, UK , France), GQ , W Magazine and many more. Joan also very recently worked with an icon Beyonce for the video 'Yonce' where she looked amazing as she stood next to some of the most beautiful women in the world. Joan is a tall girl like myself, she stands at an impressive 5 feet 10.5 inches. She has gorgeous brown hair and eyes. She not only is not only beautiful but incredibly smart Joan has a bachelors degree in Psychology. Joan is intelligent, clever and she seems like a really genuine person. The reason i chose her to launch my model Monday series is that as a woman more specifically a black woman to see Joan so successful it motivates me and hopefully other women out there to follow our dreams.
Estee Lauder's Richard Ferretti on Joan: “The word supermodel is overused, but if there is any woman of our generation who deserves the title, it’s Joan. She has the perfect face.”
So Victoria Secret had a deal going on that ended on 1st of January :( The deal was that you could purchase 6 beauty products for $35 and they would throw in an extra free product. So i picked up 7 products for $35 and i also picked up a VS purse for $12. I purchased products from 3 different VS brands : 'Sheer Love', 'Pure Seduction' (my favorite )and 'Love Spell'. From the Sheer Love line i picked up a 250 ml body wash, 250ml Fragrance Mist and a smoothing body scrub. Everything from this line smells great, it smells like pink lilies and its long lasting, the smoothing body scrub is my favorite it works wonder for dry skin. From the Pure Seduction line i picked up 250ml hydrating body lotion, 6.5 oz deep softening body butter and 30ml eau de toilette spray. Pure Seduction line is my personal favorite its sweet and strong but not over powering, it smells like red plum or cherries. The body butter really does work it is amazing. From the Love Spell line i only got the 30ml eau de toilette spray. Every girl knows how the Love Spell spray smells, that smell captivated out tween into teen years. I actually purchased it for my younger 13 year old sister. For those who dont know it smells like lavender and peaches. Lastly i purchased a VS purse that holds my iphone, it is silver with slots for my cards.
Anna Wintour, is one of the women, not only in fashion but in general, that i greatly respect and admire. She is one of the most respected women in fashion she has built up a legacy and a culture that i respect so much. I really would like to emulate her qualities as she is a female who garners respect from the world at large.
For those of you who dont know Anna Wintour, she is the editor-in-chief of American 'Vogue'. She has had that position since 1988.
Below is a really interesting documentary on Ms. Wintour.
1. LBD (Little Black Dress) Fashion historians say the origin of this style was first designed in the 1920's by fashion designers Coco Chanel and Jean Patou. The LBD is an essential to any woman's wardrobe, the dress should be sexy, sophisticated and it should accentuate you best qualities and hide your flaws. It should not be too short nor too long. You can get a great affordable LBD at Macys or The Gap. One of those unspoken rules in fashion is that every woman should own a black dress that can be dressed up for an evening out and also dressed for a business meeting. Think Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'
2. Black Blazer A Black Blazer is really great clothing to own. It literally can change an entire outfit with the right accessories. The Blazer must fit well, not baggy or over sized (unless that's the look you're going for). If you want to look taller you should get a longer blazer, it really does elongate the body. You can mix and match and build ensembles around your blazer. You really dont have to splurge on a blazer, H&M has a great selection of black Blazers for great prices.
3. Blue Jeans Everyone whether male or female should own a good quality pair of jeans. The jeans don't necessarily have to be the ones currently in style but they should fit well and accentuate your best quality. You should preferably get one in a dark wash color it tends to go well with anything in your closet. When buying jeans go ahead and spend a little more than you normally would. A good quality jeans will last you longer rather than cheap jeans. The Gap, Hollister, Levis and American Eagle sell great jeans for reasonable prices.
4. White Dress Shirt A good white dress shirt is a great addition to your wardrobe. Its so versatile it can be tucked into a pencil skirt or pants, it can be worn out over some dark jeans. A crisp white blouse can make any outfit look effortless.
5. Pencil Skirt The pencil skirt is a classic. Its sexy, powerful and sophisticated and it really does flatter any figure. I would go with neutral colors so it will be versatile enough to match anything in your closet. A pencil skirt can take you from day to night effortlessly . Do not purchase skirts that are too tight or too loose get something that fits right. You should be able to sit, breathe and walk comfortably in the skirt.
6. Black Pumps Black Pumps are the LBD of shoes. They can be styles with any outfit whether its stilettos or pointy toes. If you're like me and you're getting used to wearing heels i would start out with heels less that 3 inches. But if you're a heel connoisseur go for the 4inch and up. Nine West and Guess offer a great selection of classic black pumps. [ I'm right now trying to acquire a pair of classic black Christian Louboutins] If you can, you should invest in a pair for yourself but dot break your bank.
7. Ballet Flats This is a big staple for me. They will go a long way in your closet. It sooo versatile literally they go with everything. You don't have to stick with just black you can venture out and get cheetah print, nude or bright colors, but i would get a pair of black first. Based on personal experience and what I've heard from family and friends its best you get a decently priced flats rather than getting a really expensive one. Target and Burlington Coat Factory have great selection of flats.
I am literally obsessed with Victoria Secret Angels. Call it cliché but I've always wanted to be a Victoria Secret Angel. But to be one it's like 40% luck and 500% looks. The Fashion show was great. It was divided into six sections: British Invasion, Birds of Paradise, Parisian Nights, Shipwrecked, Snow Angels and the Pink Network. The show also had backstage film of the angels getting ready and they also had segments where the models would talk about there childhood, social media and other interesting topics. The Fall Out Boys, T Swift , Neon Jungle and A Great Big World preformed. Comparing the show to other years it was pretty ok.
The opening began with the British Invasion. The Fall Out Boys and Taylor Swift performed the Fall Out Boys hit song "My songs know what you did in the dark". The beautiful Candice Swanepoel opened up the show, she wore a 10 million bra and look amazing her hair, skin everything was amazing.. Cara Delevingne also came out in her football outfit. The shipwrecked section was really more soothing and slow, A Great Big World performed 'Say Something' it was really nice. The color scheme was more pastel and light colors really soft. Parisian nights section was sexy and i loved that Miley Cyrus song F U was creatively played. Adriana Lima look just stunning red is her color so amazing so sexy. Next section was the Birds of Paradise i really loved the feathers, the wings were gorgeous and creative. Alessandra Ambrosio looked stunning her wings were my favorite wings. The Fall Out Boys performed aptly there song Phoenix. The next section was the PINK section where Neon Jungle performed 'Trouble'. I loved this section it was up beat the colors and outfits were creative and wild and everything i excepted PINK to bring also the accessories were awesome. The Snow Angel section was the last and Taylor performed her hit 'I Knew You Were Trouble' and i must say she held here own she sang well and looked amazing. All the models looked amazing especially the model Lindsay Ellingson who walks the runway wearing the 3D corset, bustle arm and headpeice made using Swarovski Crystals. Everything glitz and glam and really over the top and and angelic the backdrop and the 'snow' falling gave it a really nice touch.
